As a solo traveller I don’t leave home without these safety items

Solo travel is one of life‘s great joys. I truly believe you can learn so much about the world, about others, about yourself, when you explore new places on your own. But let’s be real—solo travel safety concerns often keep people from getting out there.

Since I started writing about my travels I often hear from people who dream of travelling independently but are nervous. I want you to have peace of mind wherever you may roam. So I’m sharing my list of Essential Safety Items for Solo Travellers. This is based on decades of experience travelling to the world’s greatest cities in more than 25 countries, and it’s the travel packing list I’d give my own friends and family.

My Top Safety Tip

Before I let you dive in, it’s important to say that there’s no such thing as aperfectly safe place. The best things you can do are to stay aware and take precautions. The most important tip of all is to trust your own gut. The common sense that serves you well at home will come in handy wherever you go. That said, these items will help make you a savvy, safer traveller. With a few smart purchases, you can head off into the world with more confidence.

Solo Travel Safety Essential Packing List

Apple Air Tags

AirTags are a game changer for keeping eyes on your luggage.

These small trackers work on Bluetooth to send a signal to your phone that tells you where they are. Attach them to your luggage, purse or other item and you can see where it is on a map in real time. It can also play a sound to help you find it if it’s close to you.  Great for peace of mind when you check a bag while flying, have to put it in an undercarriage on a train or bus, leave it behind at a hotel, or anywhere really.

Pro Travel Tip: Use Airtags on your person too. You can share with friends/family at home and they’ll know where you are at all times.

Android User? Tags for you too!

I use Apple AirTags but there are many SmartTags for Samsung and other options for Android users.

The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag gets good reviews.

TSA Approved Locks

If you want to put a lock on your checked bags, get a TSA Lock—security personnel can open these without having to cut your lock or your bag if they decide to screen it, then relock them.

This can be used in many of the biggest airports in USA, Canada and worldwide.

Look for a red diamond shape on the lock which means it’s TSA approved.

Luggage Tags

Yes, these are still important. Especially if your bags are lost by an airline.

Pro Travel Tip: Do not fill in your first and last name with full home address. Con artists don’t need to know who you are and that your home is unattended. Just write your last name with first initial and use an office address or hotel where you are headed.

I love the Kate Spade luggage tags because they are vegan and cute.

Mini Portable Charger for iPhone

Never leave your phone unattended to charge at some far-away outlet again.

I like this small portable charger because it clips right into my phone without use of cable, and shows the percentage remaining.

Pacsafe CrossBody Bag

Ditch the backpack. A crossbody bag is much harder to snatch and I love having my things closer at hand.

The brand PacSafe is favoured by solo travellers for anti-theft  features like slash-resistant material and tamper-proof zippers.

This gender-neutral design blends in and suits all body sizes and styles.

A Stylish PacSafe Crossbody

Want the security of anti-theft bag but also something stylish?

This pink Pacsafe crossbody bag has a detachable, wire reinforced anchor strap is made from recycled polyester. Heavy duty but subtle!

A Vegan Crossbody Bag

Canada’s Matt & Nat makes beautiful, functional vegan bags and this crossbody comes in fun colours and adjustable strap

For the Beach: Waterproof Phone Case

Solo at the beach or hotel pool? You need a waterpoof case so you don’t need to leave your belongings unattended.

There are a many cases that just protect your phone from water but I like this one so you can put a few more things in there – room key, credit card, spf!

Hotel Safety: Door Jam

Many women solo travellers swear by the extra security of a Door Lock Brace when staying in hotels.

Easy Installation: No tools required! Simply position the DoorJammer below the handle, insert it under the door, and twist the screw clockwise for a secure fit.
